De Blasio Visits Brooklyn Navy Yard as NYC Companies Make Components To Combat Coronavirus
The Brooklyn Navy Yard, part of the arsenal of democracy during World War II, is now home to a budding effort to make supplies for the battle against coronavirus.
Local companies based there recently began assembling 120,000 face shields for health care workers.
“This is like a wartime factory,” Mayor de Blasio said on a brief Thursday visit. “This is what people had to do in wars all over this world — when there weren’t going to be supplies coming in from somewhere else, they had to create their own. That’s what’s happening here in Brooklyn.”
Until recently, Bednark Studio and Duggal Visual Solutions were using their Brooklyn Navy Yard spaces to plan commercial events and providing printing services, respectively. Over the weekend, they got the green light from the city’s Health Department to assemble the masks, using supplies from a vendor on Long Island.
